Friday and Saturday, November 20th and 21st, 2020 — Christchurch, NZ — Tombstone Entertainment, CANNA, Waghorn Builders and Slick Burgers have teamed up for the 8th annual Groovefest. The two-night, all-inclusive music festival takes place at ‘A Rolling Stone’ in Christchurch, New Zealand. Located in the Christchurch CBD — Groovefest is the perfect event for music aficionados who prefer to “experience” live music and interact with artists among a like-minded community.

Prizes, giveaways, and artist merch and more are included and attendees are welcome to participate in all activities.

The principle sponsor CANNA are more and more enthusiastic about supporting NZ music each year. This year at Groovefest 8, CANNA will be holding a giveaway for a Tombstone/CANNA Fender Stratocaster. To enter vist  or enter by writing on our entry cards on either night. (Winner announced on the Saturday night.)

“In an effort to even further build community and provide you with an amazing musical experience, we are excited to launch Groovefest 8!” — The Groovefest Team.

After the COVID-19 level changes, Groovefest 8 has encountered many set backs such as date rescheduling, venure re-booking, multiple artist re-booking and line up changes. This however has not stopped the event and the show must go on!

The 2020 line-up now features a diverse range of acts, spanning genres such as heavy, stoner and power rock, jazz, dub, roots, funk, sonic punk, psychedelic indie rock and much more. Something for everyone!

Returning artists include crowd favourites Stonehurst, a local and national favourite whose ‘Sabbath-esque heavy psychedelic power rock’ riffs have travelled to ears all over NZ since 2007. With their new tracks and fresh line-up, this is set to be the best performance any Groovefest event has seen yet!

Also back for a second year is the Christchurch based trio SCROOGE, whose fusion of bass-heavy funked dub rock kept the crowd dancing like crazy at last year’s fest.

There are a bunch of GF newcomers included in the 2020 line-up as well. Auckland based Makeshift Parachutes will be bringing their seductively compelling mix of psychedelic and indie rock, blending ethereal vocals and atmospheric guitars to our eager Cantabrian minds for the first time.

Christchurch’s own Dusty Hustle will be bringing back their 6-piece roots/dub/reggae/rock act this year. With reggae roots style guitar, deep bass grooves over tight drum breaks and rhythms, layered with keys/synths, trumpet, sax, trombone and harmonious vocals, this band always brings the party!

SLOTH MOTH, a new to Christchurch collaboration between Michael Koefman (of Order of Diptera, Amidst Haze) and Victor Thompson (of Snail Rider), are a new sophisticated take on a Katatonia/Karnivool-esque inspired experimental and melodic 'Sloth Rock'.

If you’re into heavy, driving, progressive rock, with moments of introspective contemplation, Elidi explores the diverse musical and lyrical groove-oriented themes that you’ve been craving! This is a must-see act for all prog lovers!

Bad Llamas are an Indie/Rock/Pop originals band from Christchurch. As first timers at Groovefest, they have set out to harness you into a rollercoaster of emotions with their catchy and highly groove able numbers.

Themeta is the funkiest instrumental jazz rock fusion band in town. Witnessing Christchurch’s own Zappa inspired grooves with a King Crimson twist, you’ll leave feeling highly satisfied after following along to the many wonderful elements of this impressive act. Lead by guitarist Steven Gill (of bands For the King and I Am You).

Last but not least we have the two bands who, not only won the Groovefest Band Competition, but deservedly earned their spot on this great line up of acts:

Sovereign are a hard hitting 4-piece local Rock Band lead by the talented lick extraordinaire Jesse Bruce. These boys have been making waves in the Christchurch music scene of recent and are excited to add Groovefest to their musical Journey.

Having perfected their craft of refined heavy riffs, driving bass, and ambient keys with powerful vocals, Electric Temples sound ready as ever to hit the Groovefest stage this November. Be sure to catch this up and coming act of hard rock with a psychedelic twist
